Encore European Tour — Budapest to Amsterdam with Christmas Markets

November 19, 2018

15 Days | 16 Cities | 5 Countries

MS Johann Strauss

Overview

Join us for our grand lady the MS Johann Strauss for a festive European adventure like no other!  After embarking in Budapest we sail upstream towards Bratislava, once the coronation city of Hungarian and Austrian royalty & Vienna, one of the most beautiful & vibrant cities in the world.

We sail through the breathtaking UNESCO World Heritage Wachau Gorge visiting the gorgeous wine town of Durnstein and the majestical Benedictine Abbey in quaint Melk.  Our last stop in Austria is bustling Linz before we cross the border into Germany where we visit the beautiful cities of Regensburg with its ancient sausage kitchen and medieval stone bridge, Nuremberg with its fascinating WWII past, Bamberg, home of smoked beer & Wurzburg with its magnificent Residenz Palace and wineries. Enjoy a festive atmosphere as Germany and the rest of Europe prepare for a magical Christmas season with their Christmas Markets as we head towards the Main Danube canal and the Main river. Here we visit gorgeous Wertheim, home to 7th generation glass blowing Ittig family & historic Miltenberg before reaching the magnificent Rhine river with its old half-timbered wine towns such as charming Rudesheim. Mighty Koblenz at the confluence of the Rhine & Mosel rivers is our next stop with its many historical churches and stories. We then sail towards the cultural hive of Dusseldorf before ending our adventure in Amsterdam where you will disembark with so many wonderful memories.

Guest Musicians John McEuen, Multi-Grammy-winning artist and a Founding member of the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band and John Cable. Take it to the river!
Join acoustic music legend John McEuen for a lifetime of new memories to be made – on the scenic Danube River with the esteemed Teeming River Cruises- while visiting beautiful historic towns of Germany, all decked out with boughs of holly and Christmas cheer in the European Christmas Market fashion, seemingly just for us. John (an original founding member of Nitty Gritty Dirt Band) will perform his favorite music from his 50 NGDB years and the stories that go with it, along with a multi-media show that takes us on their historic trip to Russia in 1977. (NGDB was the FIRST American group to go there). Take it from – well, John – who has been on the road for 55 years, “I have never encountered such a constant barrage of great food, vistas, educational and fun things, so easily … as I did on my first River Cruise with Marilyn last August. Worries evaporate the food is all great.”
“Floating smoothly from town to town, our hotel room traveled with us, through historic sites. Castles, churches, abbeys, museums, immaculate farmland, and cute houses show you where Disney got a lot of ideas. Recognizing America’s influences from Europe is exciting, and shows how connected we all really are. The language was never a problem in any of my European travels, and the ship’s staff is multilingual on top of it”.
A great time with the music from this music icon, “I bring my instruments for storytelling and songs, from my life’s journey in music”.
“It’s exciting meeting fans and new people and gets to spend time with them as we glide to the next town’s historic cute streets lined with Christmas markets. And, after dinner on a night or two, as the ship pulls away to the next town, we adjourn to the lounge for what to me is like the old coffee house/folk club days of yore… your yore and mine. And please, if you come, play a game of chess with me!” Favorite Nitty Gritty songs, the stories behind them, bluegrass, music from the landmark Will the Circle Be Unbroken album and the story behind it (this album John initiated with NGDB is in the Library of Congress AND the Grammy Hall of Fame), along with songs of friends from over the years – together we create what I like to call forever moments.”
“The downside? Well, it’s not the checking in and out of a different hotel daily (you know, can’t check in until 3:00, out by 11:00), or looking for hotel parking for the rental car, or looking for food you could count on being good, or wondering just where to go in the new town to park close to the Christmas market. That’s if you fly and drive. Those things do not exist, as your ride – and room and suitcase – and food – dock daily right next to where you want to be! The downside? No matter how long, the trip is too short!”
McEuen will be bringing fellow ex-NGDB member guitarist/singer John Cable with him, and together they will both transport us back to the great times of America’s musical past. (Cable was in the NGDB several years, and when they went to Russia). Cable is currently on the road often with McEuen playing about 90 cities a year. Cable will also host a songwriting workshop at a soon to be specified time during the cruise.

Expanding over seven hills, each crowned by a church, Bamberg is often called “Franconian Rome”. One thing is for certain, you will love your viewpoint as you spend your day sauntering along the cobbled lanes bordered by half-timbered buildings, blooming flowers, and waterways. Arched bridges add to the fairy-tale image of this medieval town. In fact, the entire Old Town is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. While there you might also like to try Bamberg’s distinctive smoke-flavored beer first brewed in 1536 before returning to the ship.
